Old School

“Old School.” That’s me. I did the garage band thing back in the 60’s using instruments rented from Leo’s Music in downtown Oakland, CA. I had a Fender Strat and a Fender Bandmaster amp. We were just kids. We played all of the 3-chord songs of course like “Louie Louie” and “Gloria.” Great memories…

I honed my self-taught guitar skills in the 70’s with a soul/funk & Latin music band called the Mixed Emotions. Seven piece with a horn section. We covered the likes of Al Green, James Brown, Tower of Power, Kool and the Gang and The Ohio Players. We recorded a couple of singles of original songs on an independent label that were promoted unsuccessfully in the US and Europe and ended up being unreleased. In more recent years pirated copies of the singles surfaced on the market in Europe and the songs have become staples on the playlists of “Northern Soul” club’s DJ’s…

Although my musical tastes include a wide variety of current styles I still enjoy the old stuff. The latest mix CD I made for daily listening in the car includes tunes by Al Green, The Brothers Johnson, Tavares and Johnnie Taylor. I’ve also made other CD’s with songs by today’s artists like Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews, Coldplay, Green Day and the Mexican band Los Tiegres del Norte.

So you see, I really do like a wide variety of music. But I’ll take an “Old School” band with a horn section any day…
